Dump Trucks are extraordinary vehicles that bring a much needed service to the locations which they are used. Whether in construction, waste management or mining, the pivotal role that they play cannot be overlooked.
Dump Trucks: Body Style
There are three common body styles that are used to dump trucks, with each of them offering a specific purpose. Rectangle, Half Round and Elliptical
You probably think of a rectangle body style when picturing a dump truck. Having a rectangle will offer the most room while maintaining a lower center of gravity regardless of the load size. Rectangle style's also allow you double-wall the bed in order to hide any visible damage to the inside.
Half-Round styles can offer higher performance in certain areas due to the pressure distribution in the bed. The semi-circular shape means there is not a need for supporting cross members, which allows for extra payload capacity.
Semi-Elliptical bodies offer the best of both of the two styles mentioned above. The floor is similar to a rectangle shape while also not requiring the cross members for extra support.
Dump Trucks: Materials
Steel and aluminum are the two metals that you will most commonly choose from when purchasing a dump truck. The choice will depend on what tasks you need to complete.
Steel: Historically, this has been the material of choice due to it's ability to withstand harsh and abrasive loads. Steel is also considered a better financial option for long-term use because of the longevity it offers over aluminum.
Aluminum: As industries begin looking for lighter materials, the dump truck was not overlooked. Aluminum offers less than half the tensile strength of steel and has been paired with other alloys in order to make-up for this lost of strength. Cost of ownership is much lower as aluminum is not at risk for corrosion and provides better fuel efficiency because of the weight reduction.
Dump Trucks: Drive Train
It's no secret that dump trucks are heavy. Knowing this, it's important to also look at components of the truck outside of the bed.
Engines
Choosing an engine that is too small or in a rough condition could cost far more than you're budget calls for. Engine power is the best way to approach the decision of purchasing a truck as it will allow for you to cover both light and heavy payloads. A good safe zone for motor horsepower is 400-600hp.
Transmission
Automatic transmissions may offer a more comfortable drive, but are not the best option when it comes to dump trucks. The ability to choose what gear you're in will increase your control and limit unnecessary wear.
You may also look out for an IAM or integrated automatic transmission. It combines the comfortability of an automatic with the freedom of a manual.
Axles
Looking at the specifics of axles will often slip minds during the excitement of shopping. Lucky for us, there are federal regulations about what axles are allowed to be on a vehicle by determining it's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. (GVWR)
When shopping around you or especially out of state, make sure to check on the state's specific Department of Transportation requirements regarding weight.
