With over two decades of experience, we have picked up a thing-or-two when it comes to building water trucks. Below are some of the most common items to look at upgrade or replacing when you are looking for better performance out of your equipment.
You can add equipment to the truck to increase it's effectiveness in a specific area. Or you might choose to raise the overall effectiveness and remove specific things. It is entirely dependent on the needs and standard operation of the water truck, which unfortunately is why the answer is not as easy as we wish.
Water Pump: Tiger Manufacturing utilizes a 4x3 rope seal water pump on both 2,000 gallon and 4000 gallon water trucks. These pumps are controlled through a trucks PTO, however, can be adapted to utilize a hydraulic system. Upgrading the pump will not always mean an increase in discharge rate. Adding more pressure to the system can cause catastrophic failure if other ratings are not taken into consideration.
Hydraulic Spray System: Much like the name, it uses a hydraulic motor to build up pressure and expel the water through the spray heads. There are many different spray head variations from deflector to flusher. These heads are commonly setup with two on the front and rear of the truck, with an additional on the passenger side.
Mounted Hose Reel: Many water trucks are seen sporting a hose reel that is mounted to the rear of the tank. Coming in either an electric reel or maual reel form, these hoses offer increased control for delivering water. Also, commonly found with a fog spray nozzle attached to the hose.
Water Cannon: Water Cannons are found more often on water trucks that will be operating in an off-highway setting. Their 500 GPM output allows for maximum effort when dealing with problems like fires, hazardous materials or difficult terrain. Adding a cannon to your setup can be as simple as attaching and spraying, however, it can also become extremely complicated. Always see what cannons people with similar year, make and model of tractor are using.
Internal Lining: Having an internal tank liner will increase the life expectancy of the water tank. What specific liner you are looking for will depend on the application. Standard epoxy liners offer water resistance while fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) liners offer complete UV and chemical resistance. If you have a used tank and are considering a liner but want to buy a new tank, then don't worry. Applying a liner to a water tank is possible and only requires the metal to be sanded. |
